The Jubilee Sailing Trust’s ship, the Lord Nelson, will be moored in Bristol, next to Lloyds Bank this weekend. There will be a mast climb in the morning. This must be pre-booked (613129). The ship will be open to the public from 2-4pm. Don’t miss this chance to see our wonderful Tall Ship!

Olveston Parish Diamond Jubilee Celebrations (see dedicated website for full details): Carnival Procession from the Vicarage Lane Play Area to the Parish Hall in Tockington. Commemorative Jubilee medals for all who enter the carnival. At the Parish Hall, a Jubilee Fayre awaits – stalls and activities to keep you busy during the afternoon – something for everyone. Lunches available, made from fresh local produce. Sports to watch and to take part in (hosted at Tockington Manor School – plenty of room, excellent facilities): a netball demonstration, short rounders for families & groups, quick tennis, tug-of-war and more. Also, a Soapbox Derby – a race for home-built soap box cars from Olveston to Tockington (to enter a team and for more info, download the rules and entry form – deadline for entries:14 May). Cream Teas served on The Green, Tockington, for those who wish to sit and catch up with friends & family. Exhibition of historic photographs relating to the Parish over the last 60 years: in Tockington Methodist Chapel. Late afternoon/early evening: music & entertainment by local musicians, singers & bands in the Parish Hall. From approx. 7.30pm, a Family Barn Dance or Ceilidh, with a break at half-time for a hog roast. Bar & snacks at the Hall. For teens and young people, a separate marquee where local bands, singers and performers can play and spend time with friends. At the end of the evening, the Lighting of the Beacon at Tockington Manor School. For a short time during the day (because of the Carnival Procession and the Soap Box Derby), there will be a temporary road closure of The Street. The Queen’s Jubilee Service from St Paul’s Cathedral – relayed live on the big screen at St Mary’s, Olveston. Join in the service. Cake & Champagne to follow.

Scarecrow Festival – it would be great to see lots of scarecrows in gardens throughout the local villages during the week leading up to the Fete at Olveston School & Vicarage on 16th June. Judging will take place on Sat.16 June. More details to follow!

Alveston Singers are providing a ‘Fanfare for Elizabeth’ to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. The programme includes Handel’s Coronation Anthems plus a medley of well-known music, reminding us of the past 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign. Not to be missed! Free admission with a retiring collection for Pancreatic Cancer Research and the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy centre. St Mary’s Church, Thornbury, 7.30pm.

Olveston Fete: joint fete between St Mary’s Church and Olveston Primary School, held in the Vicarage front garden and the school grounds. The local Scarecrow Festival will be judged (see May Meeting Point for details.) Entrance through Vicarage gates. 2 - 6pm.

Diamond Concert at Old Down in the walled Victorian garden. Music from the last six decades – a concert for everyone. Tickets £10, concessions £8, child £5, family ticket for four £25 (for the afternoon performance) – call 853947. Performances at 3pm and 7pm. Ticket prices include entry to the Park, so why not make a day of it, especially as it’s Father’s Day! Bring a picnic and something to sit on.
