THORNBURY QUAKER MEETING
Meeting for Worship, Sundays, 10.30-11.30am, at the Chantry Community Centre, Thornbury, (in the Hanover Room, first on left of front door). Wheelchair accessible, hearing aid loop, downstairs loo for disabled. All are welcomed on arrival. Anyone can come to discover whether the Quaker ethos appeals, but no one is pressurised. Children are welcome, but prior notice is needed.
Quakerism is a way of life rather than a set of beliefs or spoken rituals. Meeting for worship takes place in an expectant silence where we seek to experience God directly within ourselves and in our relationships with others. Out of this prayerful silence anyone, including first timers, may feel led to speak briefly. The meeting ends with a handshake all round. Afterwards we usually discuss briefly what has been said during meeting. This is followed by notices and tea/coffee.
Every third Tuesday meeting for worship is held in a members' home. We often have discussion groups, and, when needed, a group for new members/attenders. We arrange social outings, and have a monthly shared lunch. All are welcome to these events. We also have a small library which includes 'Quaker Faith and Practice', a regularly updated anthology of Quaker insights and experiences, such as our testimonies to simplicity, truth, equality and active peace-making.
The Meeting is represented on Thornbury Churches Together, and many of our members are involved in Quaker concerns and various social issues both locally and nationwide.
